Our second AI Openness & Equity Policy Leadership cohort session centered around understanding the intention, value, and suitability of open source when applied to AI. Our discussions tackled a foundational question: What does “openness” mean in the age of AI, and how can the values of open-source guide AI systems to serve the public good?
In response to the ways in which technology continues to have profound impacts on society, democracy, and the planet, the increasing power and influence of Big Tech, and the wave of regulations in the EU and beyond, we wanted to address the need for transformative leadership by launching the Policy Leadership Initiative.

In 2023, we launched the Policy Leadership Initiative to advance equitable digital policy by elevating underrepresented voices in policy-making arenas. We aimed to do this by supporting, educating, and empowering diverse leadership by offering opportunities to develop essential policy skills and strategies.
As a fresh EU mandate manifests, and elections continue to take place around the world, fostering policy leadership has never felt more important.
Earlier this month, we successfully launched our second cohort for advanced digital policy practitioners. These Cohorts are designed to complement our Emerging Leader Cohorts and address more advanced practices and topics, designed to align with the goals of more experienced practitioners. As with all our cohorts, our overall objective is to create a space where we collectively explore policy leadership themes, share our experience and knowledge, and work through policy challenges.
Last week we convened the Policy Leadership Virtual Skillshare, one in a series of virtual gatherings we intend to offer to respond to requests from our community to provide opportunities for policy practitioners to connect and exchange knowledge, to acquire and refine policy skills and to support each other while navigating their career journeys.
